Fisherman by Water by Edward Mitchell Bannister was originally painted in 1886. Bannister was a black Canadian-American Tonalist painter. Like many of Bannister’s originals this painting is currently housed in the Smithsonian. Much of Bannister’s subject matter included still lifes and landscapes making this painting unique. Bannister’s work was meant to focus on spiritual philosophy and individual expressive style. This philosophy is carried and into the light and airy feeling you free when studying this painting.
