Description
The last master of the Japanese printmaking tradition of ukiyo-e Hiroshige’s influence spanned the globe. Not only did he achieve massive success in his native Japan but European artists including van Gogh collected studied and reproduced his work. Here we see one of his characteristic views of Mount Fuji with the Sumida river in the foreground. Combining such rich color smooth gradation and poetically composed landscapes into a vertical format was largely unprecedented before this master’s celebrated career.
